Teachers will be compelled to teach pupils about female genital mutilation in "high prevalence" areas of London and other cities under plans announced today by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
Under the reforms, classroom discussions and information about cutting and its consequences will become a mandatory part of the school curriculum in parts of the country where large of girls are at risk.
Every teacher, social worker, police officer and health worker will also have to be trained in how to identify girls in danger of mutilation and told to intervene to prevent the abuse taking place.
