Human rights activists believe the introduction of compulsory school uniforms in Russia could be the solution to the conflict that has recently arisen in Stavropol, where several schoolgirls were not allowed to wear hijabs to school.
The parents of some schoolgirls in the Stavropol Territory have complained to the Muslim board that their daughters are not allowed to wear hijabs to school, the press service for the territory’s Muslim board reported.
“I think this situation can be resolved by introducing compulsory school uniforms,” Lyudmila Alexeyeva, Russia’s oldest human rights activist and the head of the Moscow Helsinki Group, told Interfax.
We need to either ban all religions in schools or not ban any religion. I am for banning all religions, but I am against a selective ban of, for example, Islam,” she said.
“If some girls come to school wearing mini skirts and lace stockings, why can’t a different girl wear a long skirt and a hijab? If there was the same school uniform everywhere, all children would be dressed the same and hijabs would become inappropriate,” she said.
