In many other parts of the world, the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam has been targeted and persecuted.
But in the Holliswood section of eastern Queens, it has found loving neighbors.
Last Friday, about 200 people came to a ceremony at the Bait-Uz-Zafar Mosque to celebrate the co-naming of 85th Road on the northern side of the house of worship.
The new sign says "Ahmadiyya Way."
"Just imagine, in the wake of the recent increase in Islamophobia, look at how beautiful New York City is," Imam Mahmood Kauser said at the ceremony before the sign's unveiling. "Today, they're honoring a street with a Muslim name. The first of its kind."
