Although Tahirah Amatul-Wadud has never previously run for or held political office, the 44-year-old Springfield lawyer said she's not intimidated by the idea of challenging longtime U.S. Rep. Richard Neal in September's Democratic primary.
Amatul-Wadud entered the 1st Congressional District race in December. She argued that while Neal -- the dean of state's congressional delegation and ranking member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee -- may have a greater campaign account balance and clout on Capitol Hill, that status doesn't guarantee a win at the polls.
"This story has been told since biblical times: It was the story of David and Goliath ... but it's 2018," she told The Republican during a recent interview at her campaign office in Chicopee.
