Labor senator Sam Dastyari has given a nod to a halal appreciation Facebook group with over 50,000 members during a speech in parliament.
Senator Dastyari ended his speech supporting for halal products and certification by reviewing a kebab shop and halal snack pack.
During the speech Senator Dastyari told of his time chairing an inquiry into halal certification of food alongside conservative Liberal senator Cory Bernardi.
The Iranian-born senator continued that he was now a member of the Halal Snack Pack Appreciation Society which has more than 55,000 members on Facebook.
‘We went to the King Kebab House in Campbelltown, referred to as the mecca of halal snack packs,’ he said.
‘The greeting I got was 10 out of 10. The signage was 10 out of 10 - it was very clear I was purchasing halal products, something I know many senators on the other side are concerned about.’
Dastyari also offered Liberal senator James McGrath a trip to western Sydney to try a snack pack after he butted in during the review.
Senator Cory Bernardi meanwhile was on Thursday morning handing out Cadbury easter eggs to journalists in Canberra conceding that ‘unfortunately’ they brand is halal certified.
