Cardinal: Muslims are on the periphery just as Catholics used to be Former Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor advises Muslims to follow the example set by generations of Catholics
Muslims must not "keep to themselves" and should instead become involved in the wider community if they want to feel accepted in Britain, the former Archbishop of Westminster has said.
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, former head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, said Catholics were once "on the periphery" of British society, just as Muslims are now.
Over the centuries since the Reformation, once-persecuted Catholics have become much more central to British life, he said.
