In a rare moment of candor, CNN host Wolf Blitzer tonight called Rep. Michele Bachmann's recent allegations against a top State Department aide "McCarthy-like."
Blitzer's remark came during an emotional on-air debate with network contributor Hilary Rosen over the network's decision to devote coverage to Rep. Bachmann and her allegations that Huma Abedin, deputy chief of staff to Sec. Hillary Clinton, has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and may have been trying to improperly influence U.S. policy.
Bachmann and four other Republican congressmen called on the State Department to investigate Abedin last month, but the controversy drew renewed media attention yesterday after Sen. John McCain spoke out on the Senate floor and called the allegations "nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant." In an interview with Blitzer today, House Speaker John Boehner defended Abedin and called the accusations "dangerous."
