Vermont College Student’s Parents Say They’re Relieved

The parents of a Vermont college student who’s been released after being detained in Syria say they’re breathing a big sigh of relief.

Pathik “Tik” Root of Ripton, a student at Middlebury College who’d been studying Arabic in Damascus when he was taken by Syrian authorities, was released to the American ambassador there Friday and was in good health.

The 21-year-old Root was one of two Americans detained at the outbreak of political unrest in Syria. The other, 32-year-old engineer Mohammed Radwan, was also released Friday.

Root’s parents said in a statement late Friday that they didn’t know their son’s travel plans, but were working hard to get him home this weekend.
