Students can sign up to learn first- and second-year Arabic at the University of Nevada, Reno this fall taught.
The classes will be taught by Dahlia Dwedar, who earned a double master’s degree from the Academy of Art in Cairo, Egypt.
Dwedar teaches modern standard Arabic in four sections: ARA 111 (first year Arabic, level 1), ARA 112 (first year Arabic, level 2), ARA 211 (second year Arabic, level 1) and ARA 212 (second year Arabic, level 2).
“The students also learn about the different types of cultures in the Middle East, and I familiarize them with the three dialects: Egyptian, Levatine and Gulf/Iraqi,” she said. “But they are not required to speak with any of the dialects. Our primary goal is to learn to listen, speak and write in the standard Arabic language.”
Dwedar said she teaches her students to sing some songs in Arabic as well.
“We also offer (college) credit for Arabic-speaking natives or anyone who has taken classes and learned to speak Arabic who can pass an exam,” she said.
