University of California system students who were hoping to study abroad in Egypt this fall will have to wait awhile because of political unrest in the Middle East.
“We decided to suspend (the program) for fall because, really, fall is not that far away and the situation is so fluid. We felt that caution was the best choice here,” said UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein.
KNX 1070’s Claudia Peschiutta reported that the decision will affect 22 students, including several from the University of California, Los Angeles.
“The last thing we wanted to do was enroll students and then for reasons of insecurity, they would not be able to attend. We will reevaluate in the spring and see if the situation has substantially changed and it would be prudent to resume the program,” said Klein.
Ten UC students who were studying Arabic in Egypt were recently evacuated.
