TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Tucson News Now is getting local reaction following a reported chemical weapons attack in Syria.
Leila Hudson is a professor of Middle Eastern studies at the University of Arizona. She has relatives and friends in Syria and keeps in contact with refugees in southern Arizona.
She said it’s horrific and traumatizing to see videos and photos of the apparent victims of the attack making their rounds online.
“It’s traumatic for outsiders to watch. Imagine watching the effects of that on your neighbors, on your neighborhood, on your family members, on the people that you live your life with. It’s beyond traumatizing,” she said.
Despair, horror and terror are what she says many, including herself, are feeling right now.
“Imagine watching the effects of this. Watching civilians … men, women and babies foaming at the mouth in the aftermath of a chemical attack. And feeling absolutely helpless,” she said.
Hudson said she believes it’s going to take a new approach from the international community in order for things to change in her home country.
