Ramadan Appointed to Islamic Studies Chair at Oxford

TariqRamadan, a scholar of international standing has been appointed to a new IslamicStudiesChairat the Universityof Oxford.Ramadan, a ResearchFellowat St Antony&aposs College, has been appointed to the His HighnessHamadBin KhalifaAl-ThaniChairin ContemporaryIslamicStudiesbeginning on September1, 2009.

Ramadanwas named by Timemagazine as one of a hundred innovators of the 21st Centuryfor his work on creating an independent EuropeanIslam. He was a member of a Britishgovernment task force, which defined policies to root out Islamicextremism in Britain.

Ramadansaid:"I am very happy and honoured to have been chosen for this position. Duringthe last four years I have been involved in research and teaching at Oxfordand this new chair will be a great means to carry on my work and to address the critical and sensitive issues related to contemporary Islamicstudies both in the Westand in the Muslimmajority countries”.

The Chairof the Facultyof OrientalStudies, JeremyJohns, said:"The Facultyis delighted that the new Chairin ContemporaryIslamicStudiesis not only a distinguished scholar but also a leading Muslimthinker, who is actively engaged in current debates about the role of Islamin contemporary Europe”.
