Remember Spanish, German and French in high school? I certainly do! Nothing like conjugating your verbs in another language at 7 a.m.—how about Mandarin, Japanese or even Arabic lessons?
Many schools in Boulder County offer the traditional Spanish, French or German and a couple of schools even offer Japanese and Mandarin (took Japanese in college—let’s just say I did not last the semester!). Now Monarch High, part of the Boulder Valley School District, will be offering Arabic in the fall as so many students have been requesting the class. Monarch will be the second school in the state (besides colleges and universities) to offer the subject.
Teacher Redouan Bouchta will begin by providing an introductory level class that will teach the alphabet (28 letters in Arabic), pronunciation, and of course reading from right to left. Students will also learn about Arabic cultures—an important topic in today’s political and cultural climate.
