Jytte Klausen, who is Lawrence Wein Professor of International Cooperation and author of “The Cartoons That Shook the World,” is speaking at a conference on multiculturalism that is sponsored by the New York Review of Books and Fritt Ord, a Norwegian foundation that supports freedom of expression and a free press.
Her “Cartoons” book examines the furor and the politics among Muslims in Europe and worldwide following publication in a Danish newspaper of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
The conference, “Challenges to Multiculturalism,” is being held today and tomorrow in Oslo. Klausen will speak today on “Multiculturalism in Europe: Policies and Conflicts,” along with Christian Joppke, a professor of sociology at the University of Bern; Paul Scheffer, a professor of European studies at Tilburg University in the Netherlands; and Malise Ruthven, a writer on Islam who has taught at Birkbeck College in London.
Other speakers include Robert Silvers, editor of The New York Review of Books; Kwame Anthony Appiah, professor of philosophy at Princeton; Timothy Garton Ash, professor of European history at Oxford, and Christopher De Bellaigue, former correspondent for The Economist in Teheran.
