The Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno is providing special events during Ramadan, the 29-day period of daily sunrise-to-sunset fasting for Muslims. Ramadan started Wednesday.
The Islamic center’s events began Friday with a break-the-fast gathering. The Rev. Natalie Chamberlain of United Christian Church in west-central Fresno and KFSN (Channel 30.1) also received 2013 Spirit of Abraham awards.
The events continue with a lecture/dinner fundraiser on Friday at the center.
John Esposito, professor of religion and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University and director of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at the university, is the speaker. The event’s theme — “Being Muslim in America” — examines the success and challenges of promoting peace.
Esposito was booked as speaker of the 2010 Interfaith Scholar Weekend in Fresno, but he had scheduling conflicts and bowed out.
