Idaho State University Silences Four Languages

POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) - The chair of the language department at Idaho State University says classes in Chinese, Russian, Latin and Arabic are being canceled next year because of faculty cuts and low enrollment.

Department chair Jim Fogelquist says classes in French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Shoshoni will still be offered.

Students cannot earn degrees in 3 of the canceled languages because the state university in eastern Idaho offers only the first two years of Chinese, Arabic and Latin.

Fogelquist says most students earning minors in Russian have enough credits to complete their degrees, but at least one student who recently began studying the language is looking for another school.
