How the Salaita Incident Imperiled the Program That Tried to Hire Him

Two years after leaders at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign revoked a promised appointment in American Indian studies to Steven G. Salaita, the program he was to join has been brought low.

All seven core faculty members who were with the program in the summer of 2014 are gone, to other institutions or to other units at Urbana-Champaign. The program in American Indian studies is offering only two courses this fall, one of them added to the schedule the day before classes began. The university has appointed a new interim director to rebuild the program, but he is a history professor with no formal background in American Indian studies.
