The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Monday evening on a proposal from the Islamic Saudi Academy to expand its campus in Fairfax.
Opponents of the proposal say they have concerns about the school’s teachings. The academy receives much of its funding from the Saudi government, and over the years has faced criticism that its religious curriculum fosters intolerance.
The academy says it has revised its textbooks and has a long history of getting along with its neighbors in the community, even teaching Arabic to U.S. Army soldiers.
The county’s planning commission has recommended approval of the expansion. It is uncertain whether the Board of Supervisors will vote on the proposal at Monday’s meeting.
