Nader Habibi, the Henry J. Leir Professor of the Economics of the Middle East, explores Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s eight-year legacy as president of Iran on the eve of elections to choose Ahmadinejad’s replacement.
The analysis of Ahmadinejad’s economic ideas, political strategies and interactions with various centers of power has just been published as the latest in the Crown Center for Middle East Studies Middle East Briefs series.
Habibi concludes that Ahmadinejad’s emphasis on economic justice and reduction of inequality, in addition to his expansion of the Revolutionary Guards’ role in the economy, is likely to have a long-term impact on the distribution of economic opportunities and efficiency in Iran. Before joining the Crown Center in 2007 Habibi was managing director of the Middle East and North Africa division of IHS Global Insight, the world’s largest economic organization. His recent research projects have focused on operations of sovereign wealth funds in Arab countries and on U.S.-Arab economic relations.
The Iranian presidential elections are scheduled for June 14.
