The decision by Cambridge University Press to destroy copies of its 2006 book Alms for Jihad and issue an apology for its contents, due to a libel suit in British courts, has stirred plenty of controversy. Thankfully, the American Library Association is encouraging its members not to cooperate with a CUP request that libraries return copies of the book they’ve purchased. In some cases, universities are now placing the book in their special collections—to guarantee that it doesn’t disappear from their shelves and remains available to scholars.
