A new program will allow students in Alberta classrooms to learn Arabic if they wanted too.
Up until this point the only Arabic government funded language program was in the Edmonton Public Schools curriculum where the language will be taught if there’s enough demand.
The new program will be available all across Alberta schools if there’s more than 12 students in the class who want to learn the language.
Currently 1,100 students are already taking Arabic classes in Edmonton.
The Arabic language is the fastest growing language in Edmonton schools says Edmonton Public Schools trustee Cheryl Johner.
“This curriculum is available to not only Arabic-speaking students but also non-Arabic-speaking students. All students are welcome in the Arabic speaking program if they want to learn a new language,” she said.
Currently students who want Arabic language in school need their own funding, the new program which is still being developed will be funded by the Alberta government.
