Elementary school students in upper Manhattan will soon be learning Arabic, officials said.
The program will teach the language to more than 200 second- to fifth-graders at Public School 368 in Hamilton Heights, officials said.
Officials will unveil the curriculum Wednesday.
The program was created through a partnership between Global Language Project and Qatar Foundation International.
A spokesman for the groups said they had no affiliation with
the Khalil Gibran International Academy in Brooklyn, whose first public school in the country to offer curriculum focusing on Arabic language and culture.
The school — which sparked outrage from locals after it opened — taught children enrolled in the sixth grade and higher.
That school’s principal, Debbie Almontaser, resigned in 2007 after a controversy over her defense of the word “intifada” on T-shirts sold by an Arab women’s group.
