As political and social turmoil sweep across Egypt, one UF student studying abroad there is being evacuated, UF administration confirmed Monday.
Prior to the protests that have sent waves of Egyptians spilling into the streets calling for a new government that they hope is more receptive to the country’s citizens, the student, a male, was taking history and Arabic classes at the American University in Cairo. Due to student confidentiality laws, UF administrators are not releasing the student’s name at this time.
What UF administration does know at this time, according to UF spokesman Steve Orlando, is limited. Orlando said UF has been in contact with the student’s mother but has not received any contact from the student.
The student is among 2,600 Americans the U.S. State Department expects to usher out of the country. He was expected to fly out of Egypt on Monday night or sometime today.
Orlando also confirmed that Sandra Russo, director of program development and federal relations for the UF International Center, was in Egypt a little over a week ago but is no longer in the country.
