Trustees at Derby’s Al-Madinah free school in final showdown with Government officials

Trustees from failing Derby free school Al-Madinah are believed to be meeting with officials from the Department for Education today for a final showdown about its future.

The Derby Telegraph believes trustees had been given until today to decide whether to resign or risk the Muslim free school being closed by the Government.

The school, which has sites in Midland Road and Nelson Street, first hit the headlines in September, when it was revealed by the Derby Telegraph that non-Muslim female staff were forced to wear Islamic dress. And an Ofsted report last month criticised the school for poor standards and incorrect procedures and it was placed into special measures.

Lord Nash gave it 15 days to produce an action plan outlining how the board of trustees would improve the situation or risk closure.
