A rally in support of Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (Social Democrats, CSSD) is to be held in Prague on Saturday because he has decided “not to pursue a populist xenophobic policy and not to incite people against one another promoting hatred,” its Facebook organisers have said.
They said he also deserves support after the recent Kalashnikov statements made by President Milos Zeman.
The organisers have invited supporters of both the left and the right and they do not conceive the event as a rally of Sobotka’s political supporters.
They mainly want to praise his stances on migration. With their participation, people are to show that “if there is a politician who does not set people against one another, but on the contrary, is seeking solutions, he will find support.”
Demonstrations and marches against Islamisation as well as meetings against racism and xenophobia are planned in several places in Prague on Saturday.
The Bloc against Islam and the opposition Dawn movement plan to hold a demonstration, coordinated by the Pegida movement in 16 countries, outside Prague Castle, the presidential seat.
A rally is also to support Sobotka in his verbal clashes with Zeman. Their relations have been tense in the past weeks, most recently during Zeman’s recent tour of the South Moravia Region.
Zeman drew attention with his reply to a question a student asked him at a meeting with the public in Tisnov, south Moravia, on Monday. She wanted to know how to achieve the dismissal of the prime minister.
