Emmanuel Macron is under pressure to make “incitement to hatred against the French Republic” a crime in the wake of the Trebes terror attack. Conservative chief Laurent Wauquiez has ramped up his criticisms of the government’s counter-terrorism policy after a jihadist known to police killed four in the shooting spree last week.
French right-wing opposition leader Mr Wauquiez called for Mr Macron’s government to criminalise acts of hatred against the French Republic, adding that the new offence could be included in the French President’s upcoming constitutional reform.
Mr Wauquiez said: “I think we should create a new criminal offence of incitement to hatred against the French Republic.
“There are too many radicalised foreigners on French soil and anyone who helps fuel fundamentalist networks should be deported.
