Muslim advocacy group criticizes anti-Hassan mailer

A Muslim advocacy group is calling a campaign mailer sent by Republicans in the New Hampshire Senate race “Islamophobic.”

The Massachusetts’ chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is commenting on mail by One Nation, a third-party group backing Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte. The mailer criticizes Ayotte’s opponent, Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan, as weak on terrorism.

The piece shows men wearing head scarves and holding guns next to the photo of a family in crosshairs. It says “Radical Islamic terrorists are determined to continue attacking America.”

CAIR-Massachusetts’ executive director says the mail “associates Muslims with violence against civilians.”

One Nation spokesman Ian Prior says the piece shows Hassan has supported policies that make it harder to fight terrorism and has nothing to do with “the vast majority of peace-loving Muslims.”
