Two men disguised themselves in burkas to force their way into an elderly man’s home before attacking him with a hammer and stealing a safe.
The intruders got into the family’s home in Dorothy Road, Spinney Hills, Leicester, yesterday morning, Leicestershire Police said.
The victim, aged 77, was on his own at the time. He answered the door to the men and was pushed back inside, assaulted and tied up.
The men stole a safe containing cash, watches and personal belongings, and made off in a silver VW Transporter van.
Leicestershire Police said detectives were following up a number of lines of inquiry and said there was no evidence the incident was racially or religiously motivated.
Detective Constable Nev Walker, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the men entering the house, loitering in the area or making off in the van.
“Do you know where the silver van went next? Have you seen any abandoned clothing?
“Have you heard any rumours about who may be involved?
“Small details will help us piece together information and could prove vital in bringing those responsible for this incident to justice.”
