Muslims from across Ireland gathered in Dublin this afternoon to protest the brutal actions of ISIS.
They say that the terrorist acts committed by Islamic State do not reflect the views of their religion.
The ‘Not in Our Name’ protest took place on O’Connell Street in Dublin city centre, with organisers estimating that up to 300 people took part.
Gardaí were unable to provide independent.ie with a crowd estimate.
One of the organisers - Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri - says that all Muslims are offended by the acts of ISIS.
He told independent.ie that the practices of ISIS are not what his religion is about.
“As Muslims we need a strategy to prevent radicalisation.
“The vast majority of Muslims are silent and need to find their voice and speak out against these atrocities.
“Our jihad is a peaceful one, and it’s aim is to bring about awareness of the true teachings of the Koran which are not violent.”
The group today launched a detailed ‘Declaration of peace and guide to preventing radicalisation’ document.
Further events are planned, with the Shaykh saying “today is only the beginning of our campaign”.
