The Flemish Home Affairs Minister, Liesbeth Homans (New Flemish Alliance) is expected to attend the Flemish parliament this Monday.
She will be explaining her decision to close the Fatih mosque in the city of Beringen, located within the province of Limburg.
The President of the Home Affairs Committee, Mercedes van Volcem (Open VLD) will also invite the Belgian State Security Service to present its relevant report in camera. Ms Homans based her decision in respect of the mosque on the contents of this report.
She came under fire from critics yesterday (Thursday), after the State Security Service indicated that “evidence from its report resulted in conclusions which were not legitimately those of the Service itself.”
Opposition parties were demanding that the Home Affairs Committee met today (Friday) with view to hearing Ms Homans’s version of events. The Alternative Socialist Party and the Flemish green party, Groen!, wished to have the right to consult the State Security Service’s report, if necessary in camera.
The various parties’ requests have been accepted. However, all parties must now wait until Monday for the hearing. Ms Van Volcem, the President of the Committee, stated categorically that it will meet at 2 p.m. on Monday.
