Subway have reinstated the ability to search for outlets which serve only halal ingredients, after this option was removed last week over concerns over staff safety.
The search option was removed followed a negative reaction through email and social media to the news that 185 stores would be serving halal only options.
While the option to search for your local Subway branch offering the halal menu has not returned to the main search box, you can locate your nearest one by going to http://www.subway.co.uk/media/news/halal-stores.aspx
The products in which ham and bacon have been substituted by turkey ham and turkey rashers with all meat being prepared according to Islamic halal rules include:
- Chicken and Bacon Ranch Melt
- Subway Melt - ham, bacon, turkey breast and cheese
- Italian B.M.T. - pepperoni, salami and ham
- Spicy Italian - pepperoni and salami
- Bacon breakfast sub
- Mega Melt (bacon, sausage, egg and cheese) breakfast sub
- Sausage, Bacon, Egg and Cheese sub
- Sausage sub
There have been many attempts online to explain that only around 185 stores nationwide are serving the halal menu, that these are in areas where demand for halal is high and even that some have been halal only for years, but the explainations seem to have largely fallen on deaf ears.
The main focus for complaints seems to have been the company’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, with comments such as:
“I consider it to be totally disgusting for that company has removed ham and bacon products from ANY of your outlets and as a result I will be avoiding ALL of your outlets until this pathetic move has been revoked” - Kev Walsh (Facebook)
“Bye bye, boycotting subway unless pork is restored to the menu’s of all branches again” - Phil Homans (Facebook)
But what do you think? Is this a simple case of supply and demand or do you feel strongly either for or against regarding the removal of ham and bacon from the menu and replacing it with halal options? Let us know in the comments section below.
