The Tennessee ACLU has issued a statement in response to a question that was regarding free speech and expression versus a company code of conduct.
The question was raised after a News 12 report on a woman who was fired from her job and banned from Northgate Mall after she was overheard making anti-Islamic comments and posted anti-Islamic signs on her car.
Tennessee ACLU Executive Director, Hedy Weinburg issued this statement:
Numerous Muslim individuals and groups across Tennessee have spoken out against the horrific tragedy in Chattanooga, soundly rejecting the shooter’s actions. They have stood side by side with people from many religious backgrounds at memorial vigils and raised funds for the families of the victims. So villainizing an entire group within our diverse community because of the actions of one person is unfair at best. However, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and the First Amendment protects people’s free speech from censorship by the government. That being said, private employers can regulate speech in their place of business.
