40% of Russians identify Islam with terrorism - poll

40 per cent of Russian citizens identify Islam with terrorism, the Sreda service told Interfax-Religion summing up the poll held this spring jointly with the Public Opinion Foundation among 1,500 people in 100 cities and villages in 44 regions of Russia.

Muscovites are not so frequent to share the opinion that terrorism and Islam has something in common unlike citizens of other cities with more than 1 million people.

43 per cent do not believe that terrorism has anything to do with Islam including 90 per cent of Muslim believers who share this opinion.

Authors of the research also cleared out that 77 per cent of Russians believe cooperation between the state and the Russian Church important to increase the level of interreligious and ethnic tolerance.

Besides, 93 per cent of respondents spoke for peaceful coexistence of various religions in Russia (4 per cent is against).
