A D.C.-area imam has been elected to head the continent’s largest Muslim-American organization, the Islamic Society of North America.
Imam Mohamed Magid, 45, executive director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society in Sterling, already was vice president of ISNA and a well-known regional interfaith leader. ADAMS is one of the biggest mosques in the region and is known for its ethnic and racial diversity. Under the Sudanese-born Magid, ADAMS has added eight satellite worship locations.
In an interview on the ISNA site, Magid said the largest challenge facing the Muslim community in this country is the wave of prejudice that has surfaced this summer, often around the subject of mosque construction.
He replaces Ingrid Mattson, who was the first woman to hold ISNA leadership. She is director of the interfaith program at Hartford Seminary.
Asma Mirza, a 26-year-old University of Maryland MBA, was also pickedfor one of ISNA’s top leadership spots.
