A traveling exhibition of ancient Egyptian artifacts will offer a unique opportunity for art students at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
UALR is sponsoring a course this spring built around the renown “World of the Pharaohs: Treasures of Egypt Revealed” exhibition at Arkansas Arts Center. Students will have direct access to one-of-a-kind art works, along with lectures to place them in deeper context, said Laura Amrhein, UALR associate professor of art.
Amrhein designed the course after being approached by arts center director Nan Plummer. The class is full and registration has closed.
Scheduled lectures and discussions will take place at the Art Center exhibition. Students will choose a piece from the exhibit for research projects and presentations.
“Viewing art works in person rather than studying images in textbooks or slides is truly a unique and sometimes life-changing experience,” Amrhein said. “I hope students will benefit from their direct contact with art, which in turn I hope will inspire creative approaches to their research and learning process in general.”
Amrhein said students may gain new ideas for research or creative experimentation in painting, sculpture, ceramics and applied design.
She said the course will benefit students wishing to expand their knowledge of other cultures and is a good resource for students in UALR’s Middle Eastern Studies program.
“World of the Pharaohs” includes more than 200 artifacts dating to 2550 B.C. that depicts the life and people of ancient Egypt. The exhibition, sponsored by sponsored by Harriet and Warren Stephens, and Stephens Inc., will be hosted at the arts center through July 5.
