June 12, 2008 - Washington, DC -- The Executive Director of the Traditional Values Coalition asked the U.S. Attorney General to open an investigation into the teachings of violent tactics at the Islamic Saudi Academy in Fairfax County, Virginia and the role of the Board of Supervisors in “enabling” the academy’s operation.
The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom reported Wednesday that the Saudi government’s academy continues to use textbooks which “do not conform to international human rights norms” by exhorting the reader to violence.
Some material in the textbooks examined by the federal commission also promoted intolerance toward Jewish and other faiths.
The authors of a 12th-grade text on Koranic interpretation state that apostates (those who convert from Islam), adulterers and people who murder Muslims can be permissibly killed.
The authors of a 12th-grade text on monotheism write that "(m)ajor polytheism makes blood and wealth permissible,” meaning that a Muslim can take with impunity the life and property of someone believed guilty of polytheism. According to the panel, the strict Saudi interpretation of polytheism includes Shiite and Sufi Muslims as well as Christians, Jews, Hindus, and Buddhists.
“This is an insult to American men and women risking their lives in the Middle East right now to fight this sort of poison,” said TVC Executive Director Andrea Lafferty. “We’re allowing a taxpayer-owned building to be used to indoctrinate the homicide bombers and terrorists of the future.”
“The Board of Supervisors, both Democrats and Republicans, rubber-stamped the lease renewal with the Saudi government even though they knew this garbage was being taught there. Does it have anything to do with political contributions or endorsements from the radical Virginia Muslim Political Action Committee?
“One member of the Board of Supervisors, Gerry Hyland, announced with great fanfare that he was going to do an investigation of the academy. At last month’s hearing on the lease renewal, Hyland said during the closing minutes of the hearing that he had received a report on the academy but there was nothing in writing. He also said he found some teachings which were alarming if the Koran is taken ‘out of context’. How else is the Koran supported to be read—but literally! Hear comments
“Some adult in the federal government or in Richmond needs to step in here and take charge. The Board of Supervisors may be slow to act, but I am certain that federal investigators or a federal grand jury would figure all of this out pretty quickly.
“Compelling Fairfax taxpayers to provide housing for this seditious school is contemptible. Either because of corruption or stupidity, the Board of Supervisors owes our men and women in uniform an apology for cooperating with those intent on killing them and every other American citizen.
