After being exposed for social media posts calling on followers to “stuff Jews in the oven,” among other things, students at a Texas university have adopted a strategy to cover their tracks, a representative of a covert watchdog group told The Algemeiner.
A spokesman from Canary Mission — which anonymously monitors anti-American, anti-Israel and antisemitic activity on US college campuses — said that since the tweets came to light, the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) claimed on Facebook that it “never had any members make any anti-semantic [sic] statements.”
“Rather than admitting the extent of their unacceptable antisemitism, UTA SJP has been busy removing members from their Facebook page whom we exposed,” the Canary Mission spokesman said. “The only flaw in their plan is that we have screenshots — lots of screenshots.”
One example of many such student activists, according to Canary Mission, is Ismail Said Aboukar, who tweeted: “The world would be soooo much better without Jews man,” “Jewish people are ass” and major US companies “are owned by Jewish people. How do you not know this?”
Aboukar among 24 individuals named by Canary Mission for their connections to the UTA chapters of SJP and MSA.
Another key figure from whom SJP UTA has distanced itself, the watchdog revealed, is pre-school teacher and activist Nancy Salem, whose call on social media followers to “kill some Jews” — which was exposed by Canary Mission — led to her being fired this week.
SJP UTA claimed Salem “was NEVER a member of SJP, nor was she ever a student at UTA to begin with...she has never been associated with SJP or UTA.” Members of the group also told local Texas news station KLST that they “don’t know who Salem is.”
However, Canary Mission said, there is evidence that “implicates their leadership, their members and their connection to Nancy Salem,” with whom they also had personal exchanges on social media (though since the watchdog gathered this evidence Salam has deleted all of her social media accounts).
One of many examples the watchdog provided was a post from June, when Salem and Ahmad Hajmahmoud — a member of UTA SJP and MSA whom Canary Mission discovered slaughters and dismembers animals — discussed plans to meet after Salem was unable to attend what appears to be a fishing trip.
In another exchange in June, Salem wished Dana Amar, the vice president of SJP UTA, a happy birthday on Twitter. Amar has referred to Hamas as “freedom fighters [and] not terrorists” on social media.
“UTA SJP is attempting to throw Nancy Salem under the bus in a bid to protect itself,” Canary Mission said.
UTA SJP told The Algemeiner, “It is not possible for Salem to have been a part of SJP at any point in time if she was never even a student at UTA.” The group’s spokesman also said that certain students named by Canary Mission have been told they are “not welcome” to join SJP and Hajmahmoud has “dropped his membership and will no longer be continuing with us. SJP does not in any manner condone any form of hate towards any group. Furthermore, SJP will be releasing a statement and assigning a contract that states if anyone is found stating any hateful, anti-Jew, homophobic, antisemitic behavior, they will be terminated immediately.”
