Area University Students Meet to Discuss Osama bin Laden’s Death [incl. Heidi Morrison]

Today about 50 UW-La Crosse students participated in a discussion on Osama bin Laden’s death.

UW-L Assistant Professor of History Heidi Morrison says she planned the discussion so students and faculty and staff could express their opinions on bin laden and the controversy surrounding his death.

She says his death brought a lot of mixed emotions to students who were in their teens when the Twin Towers were stuck on 9/11.

Some students, like UW-L Junior Angie Wishard say they question whether the military had an opportunity to arrest bin Laden instead of shooting him. At the same time, some students argued that the U.S. military had to kill bin Laden because he was such a dangerous public enemy.

“If we all just sat and watched the news and didn’t debate anything, I think maybe some scary things could happen and I think it’s important to have the public aware of what’s going on,” Wishard said.

Morrison says she plans to create other opportunities for students to discuss bin Laden’s death in the near future.
