Islamic Society of North America has picked a lawyer and educator from Chicago as its new secretary-general.
Safaa Zarzour, formerly principal at Universal School in Bridgeview, will be the top executive of the Plainfield, Ind.-based organization, which is the country's largest Muslim group.
Zarzour has been chairman of the Council on American Islamic Relations in Chicago and the Council of Islamic Schools in North America, along with being a member of the Board of Advisers of the Bernardin Center at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
He also was a teacher and principal at Universal School, and Islamic K-12 school in Bridgeview. He also has served on the boards of the Bridgeview Library and the Bridgeview Park District.
ISNA president Ingrid Mattson says Zarzour's commitment to the formation of responsible and engaged American Muslim youth will help the organization.
Zarzour replaces Muneer Fareed, who resigned a year ago.
