The tiny, gas-rich monarchy of Qatar presents a particular challenge to American interests.
Islamism dictates everything from the constitutionally-enshrined Sharia to anti-Western broadcasts by the government-owned media conglomerate, Al Jazeera. But the country plays also host to the giant Al-Udeid Air Base-used mostly by American forces-while the Qatari government lavishes money on American political and educational institutions.
The Middle East Forum's staff and fellows have closely studied the danger of Qatari influence in the United States, with particular attention to the Qatari funding of Islamist educational organizations, the Qatari alliance with Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas figureheads, and propaganda disseminated by Qatari media.
