The Muslim Association of Iceland hopes to begin construction of a mosque next summer after the Reykjavík City Council planning committee approved a plot of land on Sogamýri for the purpose.
Vice-chairperson of the association Salmann Tamimi welcomed the decision after the association and its members had waited for 13 years, visir.is reports.
The application was approved by a majority of the committee. The Independence Party abstained from voting.
There are two Muslim associations in Iceland, the Muslim Association of Iceland, which, according to Statistics Iceland, has 419 members, while the Muslim Cultural Centre in Iceland has 275 members.
Until now, neither group has been granted a plot of land to build a mosque.
