Bulgaria court to sit on Kurshum Mosque trial

Sofia Court of Appeals is to sit on the trial over Kurshum Mosque, which is located in the Bulgarian town of Karlovo, district of Plovdiv.

The trial is over legal right of succession between two Muslim boards of trustees in the Republic of Bulgaria.

Kurshum Mosque was built in 1485 by Karlu Ali Bey. It is the oldest architectural monument in the town of Karlovo.

The demonstrations of the citizens of Karlovo started more than a year ago. Citizens are discontent with the possibility for the mosque to be returned to the Mufti Office. The demonstrations reached their peak in the beginning of the year when the trial was heard at the court in Bulgaria’s second biggest city of Plovdiv where they escalated to clashes and the angry demonstrators started throwing stones, tear gas bombs, squibs and firecrackers.
