Bill Clinton on Tuesday called Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States a “dumb, dumb, dumb idea.”
The former president — who was speaking Tuesday evening at a gala for Emily’s List, a liberal advocacy group that has endorsed Hillary Clinton — did not mention Trump by name, but he touched on two of the billionaire’s most controversial proposals.
“You should never let any Muslims in this country,” Clinton said, characterizing Trump’s idea for a “temporary” ban on allowing Muslims into the United States as a permanent one. “That’s a dumb, dumb, dumb idea.”
Clinton also mentioned Trump’s plan to build a wall between the United States and Mexico and get Mexico to pay for it.
“I don’t think you could get Mexico to pay for it, but you could put it up,” he allowed.
But he added that no matter how many walls one builds, the Internet allows radical groups to reach potential supporters, like the San Bernardino, California, killers: “You cannot keep the social media out.”
