Keith Ellison and Doug Wardlow spent the better part of an hour Sunday night trying to characterize the other as extreme — and defend himself from the other's attacks, which ranged from Louis Farrakhan to gay rights.

For years, Republicans have sought to tarnish Ellison, a Muslim, with his association with Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam. And Wardlow has continued that campaign.
"Mr. Ellison here has been associated with Louis Farrakhan, a terrible anti-Semite, for quite a long time … and Mr. Ellison here has never denounced Louis Farrakhan," Wardlow said, accusing Ellison of seeking to downplay the association.
To which Ellison responded, in part: "I absolutely unqualifiedly denounce and reject the views of Louis Farrakhan. I've said that many many years ago. … His views and mine are absolutely incompatible."
