On Saturday the Director of the Brussels Great Mosque, Tarner Abou el Saod, told the television news program Eén that he was ready to request its official recognition by the Belgian state.

The Great Mosque in Brussels, near Cinquantenaire, has regularly been thrown into the media spotlight because of the Inquiry Commission, which was set up after the 2016 Brussels attacks. The former Director promised the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission that he would submit a request for the Mosque's recognition on 15th of March.

The situation has since changed. A new Director has been put in place and the Inquiry Commission has advised him not to prolong their worship authorisation until official recognition has been requested. The new Director is ready to submit the request.
