A northwest Iowa conservative group's plans to host an author of five books on Islam are coming under fire from activists who contend the speaker will be promoting hatred towards Muslims.
A coalition that includes the Iowa Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations intends to conduct a silent protest at Stephen Kirby's speech at the Sioux Center Public Library Thursday. The event is sponsored by Sioux County Conservatives.
Kirby, who lives in the Des Moines area, is a retired Los Angeles police detective who holds a doctorate in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. He has made presentations on Islam to organizations in Iowa and Nebraska, and has spoken at seminars on radical Islam and Sharia law.
