Call The Midwife star Jennifer Kirby has praised the show for being "incredibly brave" after it tackled the issue of female genital mutilation.

The 28-year-old has joined the BBC's hugely popular period drama, set in a Sixties hospital in Poplar, this series as new character Valerie Dyer.

Last night's episode saw a young woman from Somaliland who was struggling with the after-effects of the brutal procedure.

Kirby said: "It's a very sensitive topic. It is something that many people are aware of but don't necessarily talk about. The fact that it has been brought to Sunday night prime-time television is amazing. It can only be a good thing.
