Tony Abbott has joined One Nation's Pauline Hanson in criticising the burqa.
While labelling the Queensland senator's decision to wear the burqa into the Parliament last week a "stunt", he said he understood her point.
"I think she was trying to make the point that it is a confronting form of attire, and it is a confronting form of attire," Mr Abbott told The West Australian.
"Now, I am not saying it should be banned, but it is a confronting form of attire and I certainly would be disappointed if any Australian chose to wear it.
"It was obviously a stunt, (but) I understand the point she was trying to make."
