A life-sized depiction of a black-hooded bride has shrouded Thirroul's annual arts festival in controversy after it was deemed "inappropriate" and banned from exhibition.

The work's creator, Richard Perin, fired off an angry protest email to Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery on Thursday morning after festival organisers told him to remove the work from display at the village library, on the say-so of a council staffer.

Some debate surrounds whose decision it was to ban the life-sized mannequin.
