A former army officer has told an inquiry he finds it strange that in a non-Muslim country such as Australia it's difficult to find a chicken that's not sacrificed to Allah.

The Senate inquiry into food certification has heard claims fees paid to organisations that certify halal food are financing extremism and ending up in the hands of terrorists.

But two different government agencies have told the inquiry there's no evidence to support the allegations.
